Prickly, prolific and often unwelcome in the garden, the humble stinging nettle is easy to overlook. But this familiar wild plant has been used for centuries in food, herbal preparations and traditional remedies, and today it is earning renewed attention as an ingredient in modern botanical skincare.
Nettle, or Urtica dioica, contains an interesting natural mix of vitamins, minerals, flavonoids and other plant compounds. Despite its somewhat tetchy reputation, the plant is actually rather good for humans in a surprising number of ways. In skincare, it is particularly valued in formulations created for oily, combination, blemish prone and unsettled skin.
At Raven Botanicals, nettle is one of those ingredients we love precisely because it doesn't need to be exotic to be extraordinary. It grows abundantly around us in Scotland, has a long history of traditional use and has a genuine role to play in modern beauty.
So we couldn't resist extolling the virtues of this tiny but mighty, punchy packhorse of the weed world.
Therapeutic use of nettles can be traced back thousands of years, and much of that ancient knowledge still resonates today. Over the centuries, this extraordinarily versatile plant has found its way into food, herbal preparations, medicines, textiles and even beer. And, to our delight, skincare.
Nettles aren’t just good for your skin, they have deep roots in folklore! Nettles feature widely in mythical folklore around the world and have long been recognised for their nutritional bounty as well as their sting. Our forebears were a suspicious lot and nettle is steeped in lots of interesting myths and lore!
For centuries, nettles have carried a dual identity: feared for their sting, but revered for their power. Across Europe, they were thought to ward off evil spirits, illness, and even lightning. In Norse legend, nettles were sacred to Thor, and burned in the fireplace to protect homes during thunderstorms. In folk healing, nettles were pulled from the ground with whispered chants to draw sickness away from the body.
Known in old English herbals as the “witch’s herb,” nettle was believed to hold protective magic. Carried in a pouch or tucked into clothing, it was said to shield the bearer from hexes and curses. Some traditions tied bundles of nettle and yarrow above doorways to keep unwanted energies out. This protective nature carries through into its modern skincare use — shielding sensitive skin from stress, irritation, and imbalance.
In Celtic folklore, nettles were sometimes seen as markers of fairy paths or burial sites of the “wee folk.” If nettles grew in a ring or circle, people would opt to walk around rather than through it - out of respect for mystical beings. Others believed the plant was gifted to humans by woodland spirits, its sting a reminder to tread lightly on the land.
Nettle was often used in old cleansing rituals - swept across thresholds, stirred into bathwater, or steeped as a tonic to “cleanse the blood.” Its sting was thought to awaken the body’s natural defences and drive out stagnation, both physical and spiritual. In this way, nettle became more than a weed, it was a symbol of renewal. Today, its purifying energy is harnessed in skincare to detoxify, refresh, and rebalance the skin.
This spiky herb has long been held in reverence - and where skincare is concerned, modern science now backs up at least some of what our ancestors believed!
The return of plants such as nettle to contemporary skincare isn't about rejecting science in favour of tradition. Traditional use can point us towards plants worth investigating, but modern formulation allows us to understand ingredients more carefully and combine them in ways that are effective, stable and luxurious to use.
The stinging nettle is a perennial plant native to Britain and a lot of Europe, although it now grows across large parts of the world. Most of us recognise it instantly - usually because we've brushed against one!
Their infamous stings come from tiny hollow hairs called trichomes on the leaves and stems. When touched, their brittle tips break and release compounds into the skin, causing that familiar burning, itching sensation.
But beyond its defensive sting, nettle is an incredibly useful plant. Its leaves have traditionally been eaten as a mineral-rich spring green, infused into teas and tonics and used in herbal preparations, while nettle fibres were once used to make cloth, rope and even fishing nets.
For skincare formulators, however, it's the plant's complex collection of naturally occurring compounds that makes nettle particularly interesting.
Urtica Dioica is often overlooked, but this mighty little plant is packed with skin-loving properties. Nettles in skincare are making a well-deserved comeback. From herbal teas to textiles, and now, high-performance beauty formulations, nettles are more than just a garden nuisance. Here's why they're becoming a go-to ingredient in natural skincare.
At Raven Botanicals, we love nettles in skincare formulations for their unparalleled ability to balance and heal. You'll find this powerhouse herb in formulas designed to calm, clarify and nourish the skin - especially in our Rescue Serum - the "silver bullet" for stressed, sensitised or blemish-prone skin. This formula combines ancient plant knowledge with modern botanical science to deliver results you can see and feel.
Acting as a potent astringent ingredient, nettle is renowned for its natural ability to sootheinflamed skin and calm irritation. Nettle is rich in magnesium, potassium, omega-3s, aminoacids, and vitamins A, C, D and K1. All these nutrients give it powerful anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing abilities.
Rejuvenating Hero
Boasting a high concentration of phenols, nettle acts as a powerful antioxidant, guarding against damage by free radicals when used in skincare. As well as having a firming effect, it also keeps fine lines at bay working as a great agent for rejuvenation.
Naturally Antibacterial
If you’re prone to breakouts, nettles in skincare offer a natural, effective solution. Since it kills off bacteria, nettle is truly effective against micro organisms that lead to inflammation and acne. It fights infections, such as pimples, eradicating and preventing them from recurring.
A Glow-Boosting Green
A great source of vitamins A, C, D and the full B complex, nettle boosts skin radiance, and gives your skin the building blocks it needs for truly natural radiance.
Astringent, Yet Gentle
Oily skin benefits significantly from the astringent properties of nettle. Milder than alcohol, vinegar or citrus, this wonderful herb can be used to keep oily skin in check and free from unwanted outbursts. Unlike harsh alcohol-based astringents, nettles are a milder way to balance oily or combination skin.
In fact, a 2016 study published in the Journal of Herbal Medicine found nettle extract to be effective in treating acne vulgaris thanks to its antimicrobial and sebum-regulating effects.
Nettle is naturally rich in plant compounds including polyphenols and flavonoids, which are valued for their antioxidant activity. In skincare, antioxidants help support the skin against oxidative stress caused by everyday environmental factors, making nettle an interesting ingredient for maintaining healthy, resilient and vibrant looking skin.
Nettle isn't a miracle cure, and we don't think botanical ingredients need exaggerated claims to be interesting. What makes Urtica dioica compelling is the range of plant compounds it contains and the way it can be used in skincare to so many ends.
Nettle has a long history of traditional use in preparations intended to soothe the skin. The plant contains flavonoids, polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds that have made it an interesting subject of modern research as well as traditional herbal practice.
This makes nettle especially helpful in products made for skin that looks red, stressed or unsettled.
One of the reasons we chose nettle for Rescue Serum is its suitability for skin prone to oiliness, congestion and blemishes.
Oily skin can be surprisingly complicated. Stripping away every trace of oil often makes matters worse, particularly when skin is oily on the surface but dehydrated underneath. A better approach is to support the skin while gently helping it towards balance.
Nettle lends itself beautifully to this kind of formulation, particularly when combined with ingredients that provide hydration and gentle exfoliation without relying on an aggressive, drying approach.
Like many of the botanicals we work with, nettle contains naturally occurring antioxidant compounds, including polyphenols and flavonoids.
Antioxidants are useful in skincare because they help defend against oxidative stress caused by environmental factors. While no skincare ingredient can completely shield the skin from everyday environmental exposure, antioxidant rich formulas can form a useful part of a wider routine designed to support healthy looking skin.
When skin is congested, oily or prone to blemishes, the temptation is often to throw increasingly powerful products at it. We prefer a more measured approach.
Nettle works incredibly well within formulas designed to soothe and clarify, while still respecting the skin barrier. In Rescue Serum, we combine it with papaya enzymes for gentle enzymatic exfoliation, marine algae and other carefully selected ingredients to create a product that supports clearer looking skin, without treating oil as the enemy.
The natural skincare industry has historically placed huge value on rare and exotic ingredients. But harvesting some of these ingredients has threatened rare plant populations and monocultures are terrible for biodiversity.
And, of course, some remarkable plants are growing much closer to home!
Nettle is resilient, abundant and deeply woven into Britain's botanical history. Not every useful skincare ingredient needs to come from somewhere far away.
Nettle is great for all skin types, and particularly well suited to skin that struggles with excess oil, congestion and occasional blemishes - especially when dehydration or sensitivity are part of the picture too.
We made Rescue Serum for skin that can be difficult to second guess and enjoys keeping you on your toes: oily but dehydrated, blemish prone, congested, reactive or just going through a phase when nothing seems to keep it happy.
At its heart is nettle, working alongside blackcurrant, hemp seed oil, papaya, hazelnut and marine algae. Together, these ingredients help to gently clarify, hydrate and soothe, supporting clearer, calmer and more balanced looking skin.
It's a gentle formula designed to address excess oil without stripping the skin or compromising its natural barrier. And with a high proportion of UK-grown botanicals, it reflects the way we like to work at Raven: looking closer to home for effective ingredients wherever we can.
It's also one of our most loved products, particularly among customers whose skin refuses to fit neatly into a single skin type. Rescue Serum was named Best Product for Acne in the 2025 Beauty Shortlist Awards - recognition we're especially proud of for a formula designed to take a gentle and balanced approach to skin that's trickier to manage.
