FAQ

What does mature skin actually need?

Mature skin needs hydration, lipid replenishment, barrier support, antioxidant protection and ingredients that can support the appearance of firmness, texture and tone.

At Raven, we don't believe that mature skin needs correcting, and we don't think it needs to be bombarded with increasingly aggressive actives. Skin changes as we do. Our approach is to understand those changes and formulate accordingly, combining effective actives with the botanical oils and barrier support that help skin remain supple, comfortable and resilient.

Good mature skincare should work with your skin, not wage war on your age.

How does skin change as we age?

As skin matures, collagen and elastin production decline, cell renewal slows and changes in natural sebum and skin lipids can make the complexion feel drier and less supple. The skin can also become thinner and less able to retain moisture.

These changes can contribute to fine lines, changes in firmness and texture, uneven pigmentation and increased dryness.

This is why our approach to mature skin isn't built around one supposed miracle ingredient. We look at the whole picture: water, lipids, barrier function, antioxidants and well chosen actives all have a role to play.

What are the best skincare ingredients for mature skin?

Some of the most useful ingredients for mature skin include hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, bakuchiol, squalane, antioxidants and botanical oils rich in fatty acids.

When we formulate at Raven, we're interested in how those ingredients work together. Hyaluronic acid helps attract and retain water. Niacinamide supports normal barrier function. Squalane provides lightweight emollience, while botanical oils such as borage, rosehip and Scottish sea buckthorn help replenish, nourish and soften skin that is becoming drier.

For visible skin ageing concerns, we particularly like bakuchiol, a plant derived active that has been studied for its effects on fine lines, pigmentation and skin texture.

The clever bit isn't squeezing every fashionable active into one routine. It's choosing complementary ingredients and giving them a reason to be there.

Is bakuchiol good for mature skin?

Yes. Bakuchiol can be particularly well suited to mature skin because research suggests it can help improve the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation and skin texture while generally being well tolerated.

Bakuchiol isn't a retinol and we don't pretend that it is. It has a different chemical structure and retinoids have a much larger body of research behind them. What makes bakuchiol interesting is evidence suggesting that it can produce some comparable visible benefits through different mechanisms.

In Spellbind Serum, we use Sytenol® A, a highly purified form of bakuchiol, within a rich blend of botanical oils. Because of that nourishing texture, we particularly love Spellbind as a nighttime serum for mature skin.

Why does mature skin become drier?

Mature skin often becomes drier because natural sebum production and the composition of the skin's lipids change with age, making it more difficult to retain moisture.

This is why simply adding a thicker moisturiser isn't always the whole answer.

We like to address both sides of the equation: water based hydration from ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, followed by lipid rich nourishment from squalane and botanical oils. Think hydrate, replenish, seal.

If dryness has become one of your main concerns, our Dry Skin collection and skin hydration guide explore this in more detail.

Is hyaluronic acid good for mature skin?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid is particularly useful for mature skin because it acts as a humectant, attracting and retaining water within the upper layers of the skin.

Well hydrated skin tends to appear plumper and smoother, which can also make fine dehydration lines less noticeable.

But we don't think of hyaluronic acid as a solo act. In Ultra Hydrating Serum, we pair it with niacinamide, squalane and borage because mature skin often benefits from hydration alongside barrier support and replenishing lipids.

It's a good example of our formulation philosophy: rather than asking one ingredient to do everything, build a formula in which the ingredients complement one another.

What is the best skincare routine for mature skin?

The best mature skincare routine is one you can use consistently and should include gentle cleansing, hydration, targeted actives, lipid replenishment and daily sun protection.

At night, we would start with 24 Carat Oil to Milk Cleanser, followed by Ultra Hydrating Serum if additional hydration is needed. Spellbind Serum can then provide your bakuchiol treatment and botanical nourishment.

If skin is feeling very dry, Night Balm can provide an intensive overnight replenishing boost to support natural collagen and elastin.

During the day, keep things simple and always finish with broad spectrum SPF.

Mature skincare doesn't have to become an endurance sport. Choose products that earn their place.
