Skin Barrier Support FAQs
What is the Skin Barrier?
The skin barrier is the outermost protective layer of your skin, helping to keep essential moisture in and environmental irritants out.
Much of this protective work takes place in the stratum corneum, where skin cells and naturally occurring lipids form a remarkably effective defence. When this barrier is functioning well, skin is better able to retain water and tends to feel soft, comfortable and resilient.
At Raven, we consider barrier care the foundation of good skincare. Rather than constantly asking skin to do more, sometimes the most effective thing you can do is simply give it what it needs to function well.
How do I know if my skin barrier is damaged?
Signs of a damaged or compromised skin barrier can include dryness, tightness, flaking, redness, increased sensitivity and products suddenly stinging when they didn't before.
You might also notice that your skin feels rough, unusually reactive or dehydrated despite using moisturising products.
The important thing is to listen when your skin starts behaving differently. More actives aren't always the answer. If everything suddenly feels like too much, your skin may benefit from a simpler, gentler routine for a while.
How can I support a damaged skin barrier?
To support a damaged skin barrier, simplify your skincare routine and focus on gentle cleansing, hydration, lipid replenishment and daily sun protection.
Avoid over exfoliating and consider reducing potentially irritating actives while your skin feels unsettled. Instead, choose products that provide water and help the skin hold onto it.
We like to think of it simply:
Cleanse (gently). Hydrate. Replenish. Protect.
A complicated routine isn't necessarily a better one, particularly when your skin is asking for a little peace and quiet.
What are the best ingredients for skin barrier support?
The best ingredients for skin barrier support include humectants to increase hydration, emollients to soften the skin and lipids that help reduce moisture loss.
Hyaluronic acid helps attract and retain water within the upper layers of the skin. Niacinamide supports normal skin barrier function, while squalane helps soften the skin and reduce moisture loss without feeling excessively heavy.
Fatty acid rich botanical oils, including borage, hemp and rosehip, can also help nourish and replenish skin that feels dry or depleted.
It's rarely about finding one miracle ingredient. Barrier support works best when complementary ingredients work together.
How long does it take to repair the skin barrier?
A compromised skin barrier may begin to feel better within days, but recovery can take several weeks depending on the cause and severity of the disruption.
Skin naturally renews itself over time, so consistency matters more than trying to rush the process. Remove or reduce whatever may be aggravating your skin, keep your routine simple and give it time to settle.
If symptoms are persistent, painful or worsening despite simplifying your skincare, seek advice from a GP or dermatologist rather than assuming the problem is purely cosmetic.
Can oily skin have a damaged skin barrier?
Yes. Oily skin can have a damaged skin barrier and can also be oily and dehydrated at the same time.
Sebum refers to oil produced by the skin, while hydration refers to its water content. Producing plenty of oil therefore doesn't necessarily mean your skin is adequately hydrated or that its barrier is functioning optimally.
This is why repeatedly stripping oily skin can be counterproductive. Instead, focus on gentle cleansing, lightweight hydration and barrier support, choosing textures that give your skin what it needs without overwhelming it.
