Self Love & Skincare: Caring for the Skin You’re In

At Raven Botanicals, we think of care as a discipline rather than a trend. It's built over time through small, consistent actions and considered choices.

For us, self love and skincare are closely linked. Not because skincare corrects flaws, but because it creates a structured moment of attention. A chance to support your skin rather than constantly finding fault with it.

Self love is often presented as something grand. A weekend away, a long bath, an elaborate morning routine. In reality, it can be much simpler. Sometimes it's just noticing what you need and taking time to respond to it.

Skincare can be one of those small, everyday acts of self love that comes with huge ripple effects.

Your skin changes with age, hormones, stress, sleep, weather and everything else life throws at us. Rather than constantly fighting those changes, a gentle and consistent skincare routine can support healthy skin while creating something equally valuable: a few minutes each day that belong entirely to you.

What does self love mean in skincare?

Self love in skincare means caring for your skin from a place of support rather than criticism.

Skincare can sometimes feel like an assessment, where all the focus is placed on what needs correcting. Fine lines to soften. Pores to minimise. Pigmentation to fade. Signs of tiredness to disguise.

We see it differently. Your skin is a responsive, adaptive and living system that has carried you through change, stress, climate and time. It doesn't need to be treated as a problem to solve. It needs to be understood and cared for.

That might mean adding hydration when your skin feels depleted, supporting your skin barrier when it feels sensitive or resisting the temptation to introduce a fashionable active when your skin is already telling you it has had enough.

It can also mean accepting something the beauty industry has not always been particularly good at saying: real skin has texture. It develops lines. It changes.

When you create a skincare ritual, you are choosing how you speak to yourself each day. Whether that language is hurried and critical or calm and respectful really does matter.

Skincare as an act of love: the gift of time

Skincare, when done well, isn't only about indulgence. There is value in the time and consistency we give it. Skin responds to what we do regularly, not what we do occasionally.

Our approach at Raven is pragmatic. We believe skincare should support the skin's natural function rather than continually work against it. That means protecting the barrier, replenishing what is depleted and avoiding unnecessary disruption.

A skincare routine driven. by self love doesn't need to involve ten products or an hour in the bathroom. In fact, some of the best routines are simple ones practised consistently.

Take a little more time over cleansing. Notice how your skin feels rather than automatically reaching for the same products. If it feels reactive or unsettled, simplify things and focus on hydration, nourishment and barrier support.

Instead of continually asking "what can I correct?", try asking "what does my skin need?" It is a small shift, but an important one.

Next time you're caring for your skin, try slowing the process down and applying products with intention rather than rushing through the steps - pay attention to how different it feels

If your skin feels reactive or unsettled, try simplifying your routine and focusing on barrier support through hydration, plant lipids, and consistency

Instead of trying to correct your skin, try caring for it as you would any living system, with consistency and patience over time.

The Science of Self Care

There is good skin science behind the idea of gentle, consistent care. The skin barrier helps keep water in, while protecting us from environmental stressors and irritants. When we repeatedly disrupt it through over-exfoliation, harsh cleansing, too many aggressive actives or constant changes to our routine, skin can become dry, uncomfortable or reactive.

Consistency gives the skin barrier a chance to do what it is designed to do.

Hydrating ingredients help maintain moisture. Plant oils rich in fatty acids can help replenish the skin's lipid layer. Gentle cleansing removes make up, sunscreen, pollution and the accumulation of the day without leaving skin feeling stripped.

Good skincare does not always need to feel like an intervention. It's often about creating the right conditions for skin to function well.

  • Skin responds best to a stable and consistent routine
  • Barrier health relies on lipids, hydration, and balance
  • Over-exfoliation and frequent changes can create stress and irritation
  • Gentler routines support repair and regulation
  • Slow, deliberate application helps signal safety and support recovery

From soil to soul

Skincare is also one of the most direct ways we can connect the natural world to the physical body we live in.

Our own relationship with plants began long before Raven had a name. We grew up in rural Scotland in a largely self sufficient home, where growing, making and living closely with the natural world were part of our everyday life.

Those early experiences were less about chasing perfection and more about leaning into curiosity and respect for the natural world. That ethos influences every facet of our lives today.

Plants have developed extraordinary ways of responding to their environments. We work with botanical oils and extracts for what they can bring to the skin, combining plant knowledge with modern formulation science and newer technologies, where we believe they offer a better way forward.

For us, soil to soul describes that whole relationship.

Where ingredients come from matters. How they are grown or created matters. How we formulate with them matters. How a product feels on your skin matters. And how those few minutes of looking after yourself make you feel matters too.

Touch, Texture, and Meaning

The efficacy of our formulations is vital, but the sensory experience matters too. Texture changes how a product behaves and feels on the skin. Scent changes the experience of using it. Touch reconnects us, however briefly, with the physical body rather than pulling us further into distraction.

Think about the difference between quickly washing your face because you have to and taking another minute to massage a cleansing oil over dry skin, adding warm water and feeling it transform into milk. Warming a few drops of facial oil between your hands before pressing them into your skin, or applying a rich balm as the final thing you do before bed.

We create Raven products to encourage this kind of deliberate use, but without turning self care into another complicated thing you're supposed to be good at. Self care has to fit into real life.

  • Sensory elements like texture, scent, and touch affect how skincare functions and is experienced
  • Our formulations are designed for slow, deliberate use that supports consistency rather than urgency
  • Care should fit into real life without adding complexity

How can you turn skincare into a self love ritual?

You don't need an elaborate routine. Start with what your skin actually needs.

Cleanse gently. Remove the day without stripping away everything your skin needs to protect itself.

Hydrate. Give dehydrated skin the water binding ingredients it needs to feel comfortable and supple.

Nourish and support. Choose oils, balms and treatments according to what your skin is asking for.

Protect. Skincare is as much about prevention and protection as it is about correction, including appropriate daily sun protection.

Be consistent. Give your skin and your products time before deciding you need something new.

Even sixty seconds of paying attention to the scent, texture or feel of a product can turn something functional into a small pause in the day.

The evening ritual

If there's one point in the day when skincare naturally dovetails with a moment of self care, it's probably the evening. There is something satisfying and ritualistic about washing away the day.

Massage your cleanser over dry skin rather than immediately rinsing it away. Add water and notice the texture change. Rinse, then follow with whatever your skin needs that evening.

It could be hydration, followed by a few drops of facial oil. Or a rich balm, when your skin feels dry. Perhaps it's simply cleanse, moisturise and bed.

You don't need candles. You don't need a twelve step routine. You don't even need very much time. The ritual lies in giving yourself your full, devoted attention for a few minutes.

A note to the person looking back at you

There will be days when you don't particularly love your skin.

You could be dealing with a breakout, redness, dryness or changes you weren't anticipating. Pressurising yourself to feel wonderful about your skin all of the time can become another impossible standard.

Self love doesn't mean you have to look in the mirror and love everything you see every day.

It can mean treating your skin kindly even when you're frustrated with it. Not attacking a breakout with every active in the bathroom cabinet. Not scrutinising every line under unforgiving light, and definitely not expecting your face today to look exactly as it did ten or twenty years ago.

If there's one principle at the heart of our approach, it is this: self love doesn't have to be earned. Consistent, respectful skincare isn't a reward for having good skin. It's simply care for the skin you live in.

Skincare is our love language to you. But the most important relationship is the one you build with your own skin, through attention, consistency, patience, and trust.

  • Skin is an adaptive system, not a problem to fix
  • Productive care comes from a place of understanding, not criticism
  • Consistent, respectful skincare is a baseline, not a reward

Love the skin you're in

The beauty industry has spent decades giving us reasons to be dissatisfied with our faces, encouraging us to see lines, texture, breakouts and the natural changes that come with age as problems to be fixed. We make skincare that helps people feel comfortable and confident in the skin they are in.

That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with wanting brighter skin, more hydration, fewer breakouts or a softer appearance to fine lines. Good skincare can make a meaningful difference to how skin looks and feels. The distinction is in where we begin, with care rather than criticism.

So the next time you reach for your skincare, try not to begin by looking for what's wrong.

Cleanse because your skin deserves to feel comfortable. Hydrate because it needs water. Nourish because its barrier needs support. Take an extra minute over your routine simply because you've spent most of the day doing other things and this is a small moment that belongs to you.

Not everything we do for ourselves needs to begin with the idea that something needs improving. Sometimes looking after what we already have is reason enough. Sometimes care is enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I transition from a "quick wash" to a "Soil to Soul" ritual if I’m short on time?

You don’t need an hour to reconnect; intention can be found in seconds. We recommend choosing one "sensory anchor" in your routine—perhaps the scent of the 24 Carat Cleanser as it emulsifies or the coolness of the Rose Quartz Roller. By focusing entirely on that one sensation for just sixty seconds, you transform a chore into a restorative pause.

Can I use the Rose Quartz Roller and Rose Konjac Sponge with any Raven product?

Absolutely. Our tools are designed to be "ritual enhancers." The Rose Konjac Sponge is the perfect partner for our cleansers to ensure a deep but gentle exfoliation. The Rose Quartz Roller is best used after applying a facial oil or serum, as it helps the botanical nutrients glide across the skin more effectively while providing a soothing, de-puffing massage.

I have sensitive skin; are these botanical rituals suitable for me?

Yes. Our formulations are a blend of scientific forensics and botanical art, created with the skin's barrier in mind.

For those with stressed or reactive skin, we specifically crafted our Rescue Serum. It is a calming, restorative blend of Blackcurrant, Hemp, and Marine Algae designed to soothe visible redness and support barrier repair. Our products are designed to leave your skin feeling balanced, comfortable, and resilient, never stripped or stressed.
