Best Actives for Combination Skin: How to Find Your Balance

Combination skin can be a little contradictory. Your T-zone might be shiny by lunchtime while your cheeks feel dry, tight or perfectly happy. And just when you think you've cracked it, the balance changes again.

The temptation is often to focus on the oilier areas with strong cleansers and mattifying products. But combination skin doesn't necessarily need less moisture. It needs balance.

The right skincare actives can help hydrate where needed, support the skin barrier and keep oil prone areas feeling comfortable without stripping the skin.

Combination Skin at a Glance

  • Don't confuse oiliness with excess hydration.Combination skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time.
  • Look for balancing rather than stripping ingredients, particularly if your cheeks feel dry or tight after cleansing.
  • Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and gentle botanical actives can work particularly well in a balanced combination skin routine.

Niacinamide: The Great All Rounder

If we had to choose one active particularly well suited to combination skin, niacinamide would be high on the list.

A form of vitamin B3, niacinamide helps support the skin barrier while also helping to regulate sebum production. It can improve the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven tone and texture without stripping moisture from drier areas.

You'll find niacinamide in our Ultra Hydrating Serum, where we've paired it with hyaluronic acid, borage and squalane for lightweight hydration.

Hyaluronic Acid: Hydration Without Heaviness

Oily skin still needs water - and in fact, one of the most common mistakes with combination skin is avoiding hydration because you're worried about adding more shine.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which means it attracts and holds water within the upper layers of the skin. It provides hydration without the richness of a heavy cream, making it particularly useful when different parts of your face seem to want different things.

Our Ultra Hydrating Serum combines hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, making it a particularly useful multitasker for combination skin.

Papaya Enzymes: Gentle Refining

Combination skin can sometimes experience congestion alongside areas of dryness, which makes aggressive exfoliation problematic for combination skin.

Papaya enzymes offer a gentler approach to helping remove dead surface skin cells and leave the complexion feeling smoother.

You'll find papaya enzymes in our 24 Carat Oil to Milk Cleanser, alongside other nourishing oils. It cleanses thoroughly without that squeaky-clean feeling that can be a sign you've gone too far.

Botanical Oils: Yes, Even for Combination Skin

Oil on oily skin can sound counterintuitive, but the right botanical oils can be enormously beneficial to balance sebum production and restore harmony to the complexion.

Rather than trying to remove every trace of oil from the skin, carefully chosen plant oils can help replenish lipids and support the skin barrier without necessarily feeling heavy.

Our Rescue Serum combines lightweight botanical oils and extracts including blackcurrant, hemp and nettle, making it a lovely choice when combination skin is also prone to congestion or feeling unsettled.

Hydrate. Balance. Support.

A lightweight hydration powerhouse made for skin that needs moisture without heaviness. Hyaluronic acid attracts and holds water, while niacinamide helps support the skin barrier and balance sebum production. Plant derived squalane softens and helps reduce moisture loss, while omega rich borage oil nourishes and supports suppleness.

The Key to Combination Skin? Don't Fight It

Combination skin doesn't need to be scrubbed, stripped or forced into submission. A much better approach is to work with it.

Choose actives that balance, hydrate and support the skin barrier, then adjust how much you use according to what your skin needs that day.

The Science of Balancing Combination Skin

Combination skin isn't simply a mixture of ‘oily’ and ‘dry’ skin. Different areas of the face can have different levels of sebum production, hydration and barrier function, which is why the T zone may behave very differently from the cheeks, for example.

Sebum itself isn't the enemy. The lipids naturally present on the skin's surface form part of its protective environment, while the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, helps regulate how much water escapes through a process known as transepidermal water loss, or TEWL.

When this barrier isn't functioning optimally, skin can lose water even while producing plenty of oil. This explains something that can initially seem contradictory: combination skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time.

This is where intelligent ingredient combinations become useful.

  • Niacinamide can support the production of important skin barrier lipids, including ceramides, while also helping regulate sebum production.
  • Hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant, helping attract and retain water within the upper layers of the skin.
  • Botanical oils provide fatty acids and emollient lipids that can help soften and support areas that feel drier.

The goal isn't to eliminate oil. It's to support water, lipids and sebum in a healthier balance, so that both the oilier and drier areas of combination skin can function more comfortably.

Can Combination Skin Be Dehydrated?

Combination skin can also be dehydrated. Oiliness and hydration are not opposites. Sebum is oil produced by the skin, while hydration refers to its water content. This means your T-zone can be producing plenty of oil while the skin itself is still lacking water.

Dehydrated combination skin might feel tight after cleansing yet become shiny later in the day. You may also notice dullness, roughness or fine dehydration lines alongside oilier areas.

The answer isn't necessarily to reach for a richer product everywhere. Instead, introduce lightweight humectants such as hyaluronic acid, which help attract and retain water without adding heaviness.

Our Ultra Hydrating Serum combines hyaluronic acid with niacinamide, making it particularly well suited to combination skin that needs both hydration and balance. If dehydration is a recurring concern, read our guide to skin hydration and how to keep moisture in.

Why Stripping Combination Skin Can Backfire

That squeaky clean feeling isn't necessarily proof that your cleanser is doing a brilliant job.

Combination skin is often treated as though the oily areas need to be scrubbed, exfoliated and mattified into submission. Unfortunately, an overly aggressive routine can also remove some of the surface lipids that help support the skin barrier, leaving drier areas feeling even tighter and less comfortable.

At Raven, we prefer to work with the skin rather than against it.

A good cleanser should remove makeup, SPF, excess sebum and the accumulated debris of the day without leaving your face feeling stripped.

This is why we created our 24 Carat Oil to Milk Cleanser. Oils dissolve oil-soluble impurities before the formula emulsifies with water and rinses away, leaving skin feeling clean and comfortable rather than tight and 'squeaky clean'.

For combination skin, the aim isn't to eliminate every trace of oil. It's to cleanse effectively while respecting skin barrier integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best skincare ingredients for combination skin?

Look for ingredients that balance hydration and barrier support without feeling excessively heavy. Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid are particularly useful, while gentle enzymes and carefully selected botanical oils can help address texture, congestion and drier areas.

Is niacinamide good for combination skin?

Yes. Niacinamide is particularly well suited to combination skin because it can help support the skin barrier while also helping regulate sebum production and improve the appearance of pores, tone and texture.

Does combination skin need hyaluronic acid?

Combination skin can benefit from hyaluronic acid, especially if it is also dehydrated. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that helps attract and retain water within the upper layers of the skin without adding oil, making it a useful lightweight hydrator.

Can combination skin be oily and dehydrated at the same time?

Yes. Oil and water are different components of skin health. Your skin can produce plenty of sebum while still lacking water, which is why combination skin can sometimes feel tight or dehydrated while developing shine through the T-zone.

Can combination skin tolerate facial oil?

It can. The key is choosing the right balancing facial oil and like Skin Saviour Facial Oil, and using the right amount. You don't necessarily have to apply facial oil evenly across your entire face. A few drops can be concentrated on drier areas, such as the cheeks, while using it more sparingly around an oilier T-zone.

How often should you cleanse combination skin?

For most people, gentle cleansing in the evening is important for removing makeup, SPF, excess sebum and daily impurities. Your morning routine can be adjusted according to how your skin feels. The important thing is to avoid repeatedly or harshly cleansing until the skin feels tight or squeaky.

Does combination skin change with age?

Combination skin can change with age. Skin isn't static. Sebum production, hydration and barrier function can change with age, hormones, climate and other factors. Someone who has always had an oily T-zone may find their skin becomes progressively drier or needs more nourishment over time.

What is a simple skincare routine for combination skin?

Keep it simple: cleanse gently, hydrate, add targeted nourishment where needed and use broad spectrum SPF during the day. You can then introduce specific actives according to concerns such as congestion, uneven tone or sensitivity.
